6. Salt Creek Nature Trail
Returning to Rte. 190, head south. The drive comes to Salt Creek, a wash that flows from
springs year-round and is the home of one of nature's anomalies: inch-long pupfish left
overfromtheIceAge.Throughthecenturies,aswaterintheareabecamescarcerandmore
salty, the pupfish managed to survive by gradually adapting to their changing habitat.
Asyoufollowthedirtpathandboardwalkthatformalooptrailthroughthearea,notice
thevegetation, includingpickleweed andsaltgrass,andlookforthetracksofnightvisitors
such as bobcats, foxes, and coyotes. Salt Creek is a choice area for birding, too; Be on the
alert for ravens, spotted sandpipers, killdeers, common snipes, as well as birds of prey.
