1. Bend
“Farewell, Bend!” a westward-bound pioneer once cried out wistfully as he left this idyllic
spotonacurveoftheDeschutesRiver,givingrisetoFarewellBend(latershortenedtoBend
by the poetry-spurning U.S. Post Office). But today this rapidly expanding ski-resort town
might more aptly be called Welcome Bend, for its pleasant climate and lovely scenery have
made it a magnet for tourists and big city refugees alike. Among the town's attractions are
Drake Park, a riverside haven, and Pilot Butte, a volcanic cinder cone whose 500-foot sum-
mit takes in a view of up to nine Cascade peaks.
Did you know…
The peaks of Cascade Range prevent the Pacific Ocean's moist air from moving
east. That means that central Oregon has some 250 days of sunshine per year.
