ANIMALS YOU'LL SEE—AND SOME YOU
WON'T
Shenandoah National Park is filled with wildlife—more than 50 species of mammals
alone—but you need some patience to see them. Animals such as bobcats and black
bears stay deep in the forest and big brown bats, and striped and spotted skunks tend
to come out at dusk. But patience, quietness, and sharp eyes can help you spot numer-
ousanimalsnonetheless,especiallyimportantwhenitcomestospottingthemorethan
200 species of bird inhabitants that live in or visit the dense canopy of the park.
13. Swift Run Overlook
From this overlook you can gaze back over Swift Run Gap, one of many spots where
SkylineDriveintersectstheAppalachianTrail.Stretchingsome2,000milesfromMaineto
Georgia, the trail is the longest continuous footpath in North America. It roughly parallels
the drive, following the mountain crest for 101 miles through the park. Numerous spurs
branch off the main path, some leading up to high peaks, others winding down into deep
ravines.
