With dramatic views of the river, an amazing collection of some of the oldest petroglyphs and pictographs in the Northwest and plenty of oppor-
tunity for recreation, Columbia Hills State Park stands out as one of the jewels of the Gorge's hot and grassy dry side. Located two miles east of
Highway 197 on Highway 14, the park has good trout and bass fishing at Horsethief Lake, accessible from your boat or one of the park's rentals,
with two boat launches—one on the lake, one on the river. Nearby is 500-foot-high Horsethief Butte, a favorite of rock climbers. And finally,
the park's most draw-worthy asset is its collection of petroglyphs and pictographs, which were transplanted here after being carved off the nearby
