Eastern Ukraine
Cossack Stronghold
Wondering about the Cossacks? Spend a day on the island of Khortytsya in Zapor-
izhzhya, the site of their main stronghold known as the Sich. History aside, the place is
beautiful with its rocky cliffs and rapids, and Dniproges Dam looming in the distance.
Caves & Mines
There are some gems lurking behind those heaps of mining slag - a particularly cute
Orthodox cave monastery and a mindboggling salt mine. Besides, the escapist culture of
Britain-obsessed Donetsk has produced some great places to eat and have fun.
Northern Countryside
It's Ukrainian to the core, complete with sunflowers, pumpkins and villagers that seem to
have walked out of Nikolai Gogol's topics. Tourist infrastructure is embryonic here, so
be the first to discover it!
