The Carpathians
Boot & Bike
The mountains are becoming a mecca for more adventurous outdoorsy types with routes
for both knobbly tyre and treaded boot criss-crossing the forested ranges. Cycling and
hiking trails have been marked out in places, but on the whole the going is delightfully
rough and uncharted.
Moving Mountainscapes
Only Crimea can rival the Carpathians for mountain vistas and peak-top views. Carpeted
in thick forest, the Carpathians are generally more soothing than dramatic, but some of
the views out across the valleys are spectacular.
Carpathian Menu
The mountain-dwelling Hutsuls have a traditional diet dominated by the ingredients they
fish, pluck and forage from the Carpathians' bountiful rivers and forests. But star of the
food show in these parts is the delicious local cheese, made in special huts high up in the
mountains.
