Central Ukraine
Jewish Sites
The Nazis and post-Soviet emigration emptied Central Ukraine's cities of Jews, but
many a crooked, Hebrew-inscribed gravestone and cracked synagogue remain. The re-
gion is also the birthplace of Hasidism, its founders' tombs attracting a stream of pil-
grims every year.
Architectural Landscape
Central Ukraine boasts one of the country's most spectacular castles at Kamyanets-Podil-
sky, but there are many other fortresses and mansions. Zhytomyr flaunts a stern Soviet
style while Uman wows with its romantically landscaped Sofiyivka Park.
Quirky Museums
What do an embalmed doctor, a real nuclear missile launch site and assorted junk from
the space race have in common? Well, Central Ukraine has museums dedicated to them
all - surely the most fascinating collection in the country.
