Visiting Chornobyl
The world's most unlikely tourist attraction, one of dark tourism's most sin-
ister days out, a moving journey back to the days of the Soviet Union and
the most thought-provoking nine hours you'll spend in Ukraine - few fail to
be stirred, scared and/or angered by a tour to Chornobyl, apocalyptic site
of the world's worst nuclear accident.
Need to Know
Where?
Chornobyl is located 110km north of Kyiv city centre as the crow flies, around two
hours' drive.
How?
You can only realistically visit Chornobyl as part of guided tour from Kyiv. You must
book around 10 days prior to give the authorities time to run security checks.
When?
You can visit any time of year; however, as most of the tour takes place out of doors,
warmer months are better.
How Long?
Tour groups leave Kyiv early morning, returning in the early evening.
Who?
To join a tour you must be over 18 years of age (no children are allowed into the ex-
clusion zones).
How Much?
Expect to pay US$150 to $500 per person, depending on the number of people in
your party and which tour company you choose.
