In-Depth Information
October
Comfortable temperatures give way to chilly days, falling leaves and the
first frosts. Ukrainians head out to their country cottages and gardens to
wind up the season and lock up for the long winter.
Kyiv International Film Festival Molodist
Late October sees Kyiv host this superb film festival ( www.molodist.com ) , a great op-
portunity to check out new cinematic talent from Ukraine and other countries. Running
for over four decades, it's recognised as one of Eastern Europe's top film events.
December
End-of-year commercialism is yet to take off in a big way here, so if you're
looking to flee the Christmas shopping blues, decidedly un-festive and
very chilly Ukraine could be the antidote.
Catholic Christmas
On 25 December Catholic Ukrainians celebrate the first of two Christmases the country
marks every year. However, for most people, especially in the predominantly Orthodox
and Russian-speaking areas , this is just an ordinary working day.
New Year's Eve
This is by far the biggest bash of the year and if you think you've seen it all on New
Year's Eve, you haven't been to Kyiv. Needless to say, gallons of horilka (vodka) and
cheap bubbly are involved.
