flight between Kyiv and Simferopol.
BUDGET FLIGHTS TO NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES
A cheap way of getting to Ukraine is to take a budget flight to a neighbouring coun-
try, then cross the border by land. Poland has the most flights from Western
Europe, but Hungary, Romania and Slovakia also provide a handful of options.
Ryanair ( www.ryanair.com ) This Irish budget airline connects six cities in the UK
with the Polish city of Rzeszow (90km from the border) and two with Lublin (just
over 70km from the border). There are also daily flights to Budapest and Bratislava
(Slovakia), from where you can continue by train
easyJet ( www.easyjet.com ) This no-frills airline links the UK, France and Germany
with Budapest and Kraków.
Wizzair ( www.wizzair.com ) Wizzair has popular direct flights to Kyiv and Donetsk
from London Luton, but also connects the UK with Katowice and Warsaw (Poland),
Košice (Slovakia), Cluj-Napoca (northern Romania) and Debrecen (northeast Hun-
gary).
Jet2 ( www.jet2.com ) Links cities in northern England and Scotland with Kraków
and Budapest.

Land
» Crossing the border into Ukraine is a fairly straightforward, if slightly drawn-out, affair.
» Expect customs personnel to scrutinise your papers and search your vehicle.
» Heading out of Ukraine into the EU and Schengen zone, be prepared for delays.
» The Poland-Ukraine and Romania-Ukraine borders are popular smuggling routes,
hence the thorough customs checks.
» When heading for Belarus or Russia, ensure you have the right visa.
» You might need special medical insurance for Belarus, purchasable at the border.
» In the unlikely event you are hitchhiking into Ukraine, it may be a good idea to take a
local bus or train across the border, as drivers are generally reluctant to take hitchhikers
over the line.
