Orthodox Easter
Falling two weeks after Catholic Easter, colourful Orthodox paskha arrives in April two
years out of three. This is more of a religious festival than in the West, with churchgoers
taking baskets of pysanky (painted eggs) and specially baked loaves to be blessed by
priests.
May
Ukraine is most definitely a shoulder-season destination and May is the
first of those shoulders. Colour returns to the snow-bleached land, the last
river ice fades and the first seedlings nudge through Ukraine's black soil.
Lviv City Day
Early May is the time to be in Lviv when the city celebrates its 'day' as well as a number
of other festivals that take place to coincide with the long May holidays.
Kamyanets-Podilsky Days
Mid-May sees street parties, concerts, choirs, parades, exhibitions and sporting events
take over the rock-island town of Kamyanets-Podilsky.
Kyiv Day
A colourful spring celebration and festival in honour of the capital city held on the last
weekend of May. The day of fun events comes to an end around 10pm with a huge fire-
work display over the Dnipro.
July
Alas, most visitors arrive in the hottest months of the year when travel be-
comes a sweaty ordeal. Give Crimea a wide berth at this time of year and
head instead for the cooler Carpathians.
