Gay & Lesbian Travellers
Ukraine is generally more tolerant of homosexuality than is Russia, but that's not saying
much. Out-and-proud gay views mix badly with those of the Orthodox Church, hence
most people's outwardly conservative attitudes.
» Homosexuality is legal in Ukraine.
» Few people are very out here and attitudes vary across the country - what's acceptable
in Lviv may not be in Donetsk.
» Ukraine's gay scene is largely underground.
» Young people and city dwellers are much more tolerant of homosexuality.
» Displays of affection between two men (and perhaps two women) in public could create
hostility.
» The biggest scene is in Kyiv, but Kharkiv and Odesa have one or two clubs.
» Simeyiz in Crimea is also reportedly a gay mecca in August and early September.

Health
Ukraine's health system is under-resourced and decidedly primitive by Western European
standards, so it's important to come prepared. Ukraine has reciprocal agreements with
most countries (including the UK and most of the EU), which in theory guarantee foreign
citizens free emergency care. However, heading to Ukraine without medical insurance
would be foolhardy indeed.
MEDICAL CHECKLIST
Pharmacists in Ukraine are the first port of call for many people suffering minor
complaints, and they will usually make a diagnosis if you can explain or point to the
problem. It's always a good idea to bring extra supplies of any medication you are
taking and familiarise yourself with the Latin name if it's not on the label. In Ukraine
this is often written in the Roman alphabet alongside any medicine's local name.
