Children
Ukraine is not the world's most child-friendly destination, so if you're travelling with young
children, it's advisable that you have previous experience of the country, or limit yourself
to a short break in a major city like Kyiv.
» Levels of hygiene are still low even in big cities. Attitudes to children's health are out-
dated and finicky.
» Playgrounds are common but very often slides, swings and other equipment are down-
right lethal.
» Generally speaking, Ukrainian museums have yet to come up with activities for children.
» Long and hot marshrutka (fixed-route minibus) rides with kids are no fun.
» Children's car seats are rare and very few people use them.
» Ukrainians adore kids and often show it.
» With a child in tow even the old will give up seats for you on public transport.
» Bureaucratic obstacles may suddenly melt away and you're probably less likely to be
hassled by the police if accompanied by a child.
» Kiddies will love Ukraine's easily accessible animal population.
Customs Regulations
You are allowed to carry up to €10,000 when entering Ukraine without having to sign any
documentation. You are also permitted to bring in the following items duty-free:
» 1L of spirits
» 2L of wine
» 5L of beer
» 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco
» €50 worth of food (not exceeding 2kg)
If you exceed these limits, you'll have to sign a deklaratsiya (customs declaration). Be
careful not to lose this completed form - you will need to present it when departing the
country. See http://www.iatatravelcentre.com/UA-Ukraine-customs-currency-airport-tax-
regulations-details.htm for information in English.
