In-Depth Information
At 760m - two and a half times longer than the famous Hoover Dam - the wall of the
USSR's first dam certainly represented a monumental engineering feat when constructed
under US supervision in 1927 to 1932. It's still impressive, although stained by years of
local pollution. It is best viewed from the Historical Museum of Zaporizhsky Cossacks.

Right by
the river, Venetsia has rooms with faux-Victorian furniture, unexpectedly luxurious for
the price. Annoyingly, you need to order breakfast the night before and tell staff exactly
when you want it. A sandy beach is across the road and there is a great sauna inside the
hotel.

Located in newly built twin towers with splendid river views, Four Points
provides comforts previously unseen in Zaporizhzhya. Most rooms come with floor-to-
ceiling windows and balconies.
Eating
The main restaurant row is on bul Shevchenka, but you'll find a few good places along
pr Lenina.
Bosfor
TURKISH$$$
(vul Yakova Novitskogo 3; mains 40-80uah; )
Turkish expats run this pleasant eatery just
off pr Lenina. The convenient picture menu features lots of
shashlyks
and appetising
Turkish snacks. Patrons smoke
shisha
(hookah) on an open-air terrace.
Fishcafe
UKRAINIAN$$$
(pr Lenina 107; mains 70-120uah; 11am-11pm)
This lovely restaurant with a wood-filled in-
terior and many multicoloured fish-shaped objects adorning the walks could have easily
become our favourite in a more sophisticated city than Zaporizhzhya. The main special-
ity is Black Sea fish, but there are more intriguing dishes inspired by Ukrainian cuisine.
Try
svekolnik
- a cold beetroot soup. Fishcafe is on the main road in the old part of town
