( http://osyamvalg-kafe.com ; vul Moskovska 21; mains 30-50uah; 24hr) Designed to resemble
a Soviet communal flat, this fun place is filled with all kinds of communist-era bric-a-
brac and serves a gentrified version of Soviet canteen food.

( 377 3377; pr Karla Marksa 46; mains 60-120uah; 8am-11pm) There is an over-complic-
ated pun in the name involving mice and a retired Jewish gangster who allegedly left a
handwritten book of recipes in this cellar place. If we are to believe the legend, this
hardened man had a soft spot for Italian pasta, Azov Sea bychki fish and Danubian frogs.
A cool place full of old topics and local bohemians. To find the entrance, look out for a
blue door on the side of the block.
Papa Karla EASTERN EUROPEAN$$$

(pr Karla Marksa 27A; mains 40-70uah; 8am-11pm) An uber-cute 20th-century nostalgia
place without hammers and sickles - think visiting a Soviet granny back in the 1970s.
Savour your beetroot and prune salad or steam cutlets made of pike to the soundtrack of
Soviet pop divas, like Alla Pugacheva and Sofia Rotaru.

has three wings: a ground-floor coffeehouse serving breakfasts and possibly the
plumpest, tastiest homemade varenyky in the land; a chichi restaurant upstairs; and a su-
perb basement 'warm-up bar' with a great in-house DJ getting the city's hipsters fired up
for a night on the town. You'll find at least one of the three open at any time of the day
and night.
