In-Depth Information
modation is in tube-shaped mobile houses, once used by oilers in Siberia , which a young
polyglot couple from Simferopol installed in their garden in the foothills of Karadag. It's
quite amazing how they keep a cool temperature during the hottest day. We also like the
computerised solar-battery powered garden shower. Away from the mad crowds, the
place is 20 minutes' walk or a quick bycicle ride from the beach. The owners can hook
you up with mountain trek operators. Phone to arrange a pickup, or you'll never find it.
Eating
You will not get hungry in Koktebel. Shashlyks, Tatar pastry, fruit and churchkhelis (nut-
based sweets) will almost jump into your mouth from the myriad food stands that line the
beachfront. There are dozens of modern stolovaya (Russian-style self- service canteens)
and cheap restaurants, but you will be hard-pressed to find anything more sophisticated.
Bogema INTERNATIONAL$$$
(vul Lenina 110; mains 60-100uah) This unpretentious place hidden behind Pansionat Golu-
boy Zaliv serves great lamb and seafood dishes, but it is perhaps better known as a music
(primarily jazz) venue, with concerts taking place almost every evening. The place is as-
sociated with Enver Izmaylov, a Crimean Tatar virtuoso guitarist of international fame,
who plays here once in a while.
Getting There & Around
Koktebel's bus station is at the far end of vul Desantnikov - the main drag leading to the
beach. From here you can catch a bus to Simferopol (40uah, two hours, half-hourly),
Sudak (15uah, one hour, half-hourly), Feodosiya (7uah, 40 minutes, half-hourly) and
Kurortne/Kara-Dag Nature Reseve bio-station (5uah, every 20 minutes).

Kurortne

Kurortne is one of those rare places in Crimea where you can still relax on a relatively
uncrowded beach. Besides, it is the gateway to the striking volcanic formations of Kara-
Dag Nature Reserve.
