As everywhere in Crimea, if you speak basic Russian you can shop around and find a
much better deal than any hotel can offer. Rooms for rent are all over the place.

view/sea view 1000/1100uah; ) A chalet-styled building under a red-tiled roof set on
the Sudak road away from the sea, this brand-new luxury hotel has large, tastefully dec-
orated rooms, cool, marble-clad corridors and a wonderful garden with gazebos.
Dachne
Lying in the foothills of green mountains, 7km inland from Sudak, Dachne is a sprawling
village of fruit gardens and many old wells with the clearest and tastiest mountain water.
The population is mixed - Russian, Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar. Several households
here are united in a rural tourism project, which gives a totally different perspective on
life in Crimea.
The deal is that you can stay in one of the Russian-Ukrainian households, which
provide decent and cheap accommodation in relatively modern village houses, while
more traditional Crimean Tatar households offer tons of delicious food as well as cook-
ing and handicrafts classes. All of this can be organised through the Dachne Information
Centre (
8am-5pm) , run by
050 646 9576, 050 761 8122, 095 143 0288; vul Mindalnaya 1;
a hyper-enthusiastic librarian.
The highlight is the home of Ayshe-abla ( 095 440 5416) , an octogenarian
Crimean Tatar weaver, who returned from a 50-year exile to her native village she knows
as Taraqtash and, atypically, managed to buy her family's house from Ukrainians who
lived there. She spends all day working at her loom next to the 100-year-old adobe
house, under a mulberry tree her grandfather had planted. You can arrange a visit either
directly or through the information centre. If you ask really nicely, it's possible to stay
with them, too.
To get to Dachne, take marshrutka 6 from Sudak's town centre or bus station.
Cape Meganom
Holiday-makers flood Sudak's beach like a pack of suicidal lemmings, so more intrepid
travellers escape to the clean and less crowded beaches around Cape Meganom, east of
the town. Camping is allowed here for a small fee (typically 15uah per day). The easiest
beach to access is also called Meganom. Take a bus bound for Solnechnaya Dolina from
