Tourists flock to Sevastopol and hotels greedily raise prices during the last weekend of
July, when the city celebrates Russian Navy Day with an impressive show of battleships
manoeuvring in the bay, planes flying overhead and marines landing on Grafskaya
Pristan. This show of force is largely symbolic. With half of the Black Sea and the straits
controlled by NATO member-countries, the Russian fleet has no strategic role to play,
apart from guarding the coast of Georgia's breakaway Abkhazia.
Sleeping
The shortage of decently priced accommodation in Sevastopol is acute, so renting an
apartment deserves extra special consideration. English-run Travel 2 Sevastopol (
050 757 5952; www.travel2sevastopol.com ) responds promptly and is knowledgeable and re-
markably helpful.

small flat in a quiet part of central Sevastopol into a modern-looking hostel with
bunkbeds in two brightly coloured rooms. On a cobbled road veering uphill from vul
Lenina, the place is unsigned, so call ahead to be met by the owners. Two rooms with
double beds, shared bathroom and kitchen are in a separate flat a short walk away.
Fazanya Roshcha HOMESTAY$
(Pheasant Grove; 050 906 8701; fazanya@mail.ru; vul Fermerskaya 1, Mekenziyevy Gory; s/d
from 180/220uah; ) Outside the city, in MacKenzie Heights, this place is ideal for
motorists because of its proximity to strategic roundabouts, from which roads lead to
central Sevastopol, Balaklava and Bakhchysaray, and to the uncrowded beach in Ly-
ubimovka. It is a classic dacha with very simple rooms for rent, a tiny pool and gallons
of hospitality poured on you by the kindly hosts, including peaches and grapes from the
garden. The hosts don't speak English, but they are used to foreign travellers. It's a short
ride or 20-minute walk from Mekenziyevy Gory train station on the road leading to
Severnaya ferry terminal, across the bay from central Sevastopol. Marshrutky 62 and 64
ply the route; ask to be dropped off at Kolbasny Tsekh stop. The turn-off is marked with
a Fermerskaya St sign.
