marked by a colonnaded arch. Here you can hop on a bay cruise (50uah, 1½ hours). The
square behind is dominated by the Admiral Nakhimov monument OFFLINE MAP

Crimean War. Walking further along the seafront, you will soon spot the Eagle Column
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (1904). Set atop a rock in the sea, it commemorates Rus-
sian ships deliberately scuppered at the mouth of the harbour in 1854 to make it impos-
sible for enemy ships to pass. The boulevard ends at Artbukhta (Artillery Quay) - the
city's main nightlife area.

Sevastopol's Defence WAR MEMORIAL

ies, this is a circular building, its inner wall covered in a mammoth-sized painting. Sup-
plemented with 3D props, it brings to life the 349-day siege of Sevastopol. Entry is only
as part of a group tour, leaving at allotted times. English- or German-language tours cost
600uah per group.
Black Sea Fleet Museum MUSEUM

Crimean War snippets, this small museum is visually impressive, even though all inscrip-
tions are in Russian. The upper-floor exhibition is less interesting and reflects the Soviet
view of the Russian Civil War and WWII.
Khersones RUIN
( 241 304; www.chersonesos.org ; ul Drevnyaya 1; adult/child & student 25/25uah; grounds
9am-9pm, museum 9am-9pm May-Oct, to 5pm Nov-Mar) The ruins of the ancient Greek city
founded in 422 BC are of great significance to local visitors. This is the place where Vo-
lodymyr the Great was famously baptised into Christianity in AD 988, launching what
would become the Russian Orthodox Church. Earlier that year, he sacked the city, help-
ing the Byzantine emperor to put down a local rebellion. Today the best-preserved struc-
ture is the ancient theatre . There's also the restored Vladimirsky Cathedral and an in-
teresting museum displaying items excavated on the site. History apart, Khersones
