VLADIMIR CHAPLIN: ODESSITE'S SECRETS
Vladimir Chaplin is a guide at the History of Odesa Jews Museum in Odesa.
What's the most inspiring place in Odesa?
There are two. The first is bul Zhvanetskoho because of the splendid harbour view
and the 'bribe monument', which they erected there. You can reach it by walking
down vul Gogolya. The second is the heart of Odesa - the crossing of vul Bunina
and vul Preobrazhenska. There is a touching sculpture of two Odesa boys from
Valentin Katayev's book Petya and Gavrik.
While in Odesa, you must eat…
» Fried bychkifish at Klarabara ( Click here ).
» Aubergine 'caviar' at Dacha ( Click here ) .
» Grilled mussels anywhere on the beach where you can make a fire.
What's you favourite Odesa courtyard?
It's definitely the courtyard of our museum, where I know not only all the children
by name, but also all the cats. But check out the courtyard on vul Deribasivska 3.
Looking from the street, everyone thinks it's the bust of Lenin standing in the
middle. But in fact it is Ludvig Zamenhof, who created the Esperanto language.
When Esperanto was banned in the USSR, the residents would tell the authorities it
was their relative.
What is the best place to swim in Odesa?
Northern Arkadia, where you get into the water from a concrete slab. There are no
fussy mums around. There is a nude beach nearby, too.
