Hotel Ungvarskiy HOTEL$

( 616 565; www.ungvarskiy-hotel.com.ua ; vul Elektrozavodska 2; r from 350uah; ) With a
miserable location on the edge of Uzhhorod's abandonned industrial zone, this plasticky
hotel doesn't promise much, but inside rooms are generously cut, clean and well main-
tained. There's a spa, fitness centre and restaurant, where the high- quality but miserly
breakfast (an extra 30uah) is served by burly waiters. Lack of air-con and transparent
curtains make for some super-heated early starts.
Five Flags Hostel HOSTEL$

ral, spartan but spotless hostel on the main pedestrian drag through the city centre. Only
10 beds so booking ahead is essential.

horod's finest digs the choice between 21st-century predictability, baroque opulence or
swish Art Deco may be a difficult call, as all the rooms here are immaculate, very well
maintained and sumptuously cosy. English-speaking staff are courteous, the location is
bull's eye central and there's a decent multitasking restaurant. Our sole complaint - the
extra 150uah for breakfast.

(vul Olbrakhta 3; mains 20-60uah; 9am-11pm) Wistfully celebrating Ungvar's all-too-short
decades in the lap of Czechoslovak affluence, this great pub and nostalgia museum rolled
into one is packed with chipped enamel signs, radios, typewriters and other assorted in-
terwar junk. Benches are tightly packed, the Czech lager flows freely, and the hand-
scrawled menu is a mixed bag of Ukrainian dishes, sandwiches, spaghetti and Czech
dumplings.
