The wings surround a landscaped court. To the left as you pass the gatehouse is the
Seminarska Church , now used for concerts and ceremonies. Straight ahead stands the
former main palace residence of the Metropolitans , housing two remarkable staircases
and a fantastic, 1st-floor Marmurovy Zal (Marble Hall). As a public facility you can
wander the buildings at will but the best rooms are usually locked. Ask at the Tourist In-
formation Centre in town about guided tours or look out for guides loitering around the
main gates. Security guards may let you take a peek into the main rooms for a small
bribe.
The university is about 1.5km northwest of the city centre. Trolleybus 2 will get you
there.
Kalynivsky Market MARKET
( www.mtk-kalinka.com ; 8am-2pm) With its own police station, bus station and dedicated
bank branches, this 33-hectare bazaar is like a town unto itself. As a conduit into Ukraine
for goods from neighbouring countries, it attracts tens of thousands of shoppers a day
and is a frenetic, wonderful phenomenon. Take any of the numerous marshrutky to;
many leave from in front of the train station.
St Nicholas Cathedral CATHEDRAL

(vul Ruska 35) Chernivtsi's cathedral is nicknamed the 'drunken church' because of the
four twisted turrets surrounding its cupola - painted blue with golden stars, these turrets
create an optical illusion. The cathedral is a 1930s copy of a 14th-century royal church in
Curtea de Arges (Romania).

Chernivtsi's main drama and music theatre is a beautiful Art Nouveau confection that
wouldn't look out of place in Prague or Paris. The ticket office is across the street at vul
Lysenka 2.
Vul Kobylyanskoy STREET

When you've had enough of Chernivtsi's barmy traffic, head for the tranquillity of vul
Kobylyanskoy, a pedestrianised street running between vuls Holovna and Shevchenka.
It's certainly the city's most attractive thoroughfare hemmed with beautiful Art Nouveau
