In-Depth Information
Volodymyr and Princess Olga stand by the entrance, solomnly ushering the faithful into
the beautiful, dimly lit and mustily aromatic interior.
Main Fountain
FOUNTAIN
(maydan Vichevy)
The dominating feature on maydan Vichevy is the fountain, a popular
meeting spot. If you descend the steps below the fountain's main 'bowl', you can stand
beneath the cascading water without getting wet - a little factoid of which locals are in-
ordinately proud, especially those posing for wedding photos.
Former Armenian Church
CHURCH
(vul Virmenska 6)
A few steps off pl Rynok stands this eye-pleasingly symmetrical baroque
church built by the Armenian community in 1762. Beyond the golden doors the interior
is a typically fragrant affair busy with head-scarved
babushkas
lighting beeswax candles
and praying before gilt icons.
Taras Shevchenko Park
PARK
(vul Shevchenka)
Around 20 minutes' walk south from maydan Vichevy, the city's main
stretch of green is a great place to shake out the picnic blanket, hire a rowboat on the lake
or chill with an ice cream to do a spot of people-watching of a balmy eve. The ap-
proaches to the park are lined with refurbished Austro-Hungarian mansions and the
grounds have been beautifully landscaped thanks to EU handouts.
Regional Museum
MUSEUM
(Town Hall, pl Rynok; admission 8uah; 10am-5.30pm Tue-Sun)
The city's epicentre is pl Ryn-
ok (Rynok Sq), at the centre of which rises the 1930s star-shaped town hall, the only one
in Ukraine built in the Art Deco style. This houses the Soviet-era Regional Museum,
which has displays on various archaeological digs in the region, a worthwhile room of
folk art from the Carpathians, exhibitions relating to the history of Ivano-Frankivsk and a
whole wing of goggle-eyed taxidermy.
