In-Depth Information
( www.kvrestoran.com ; pl Zamkova; mains 30-140uah; noon-midnight; ) The idea behind
Lutsk's grandest restaurant, which guards the entrance to Lutsk Castle, came from a re-
cipe book - unearthed during an archaeological dig - that belonged to the cook of King
Vitovta of Lithuania. The current chef remains as faithful as possible to those 15th-cen-
tury recipes (though a few tomatoes and potatoes have crept in somewhere) and the menu
is as meat heavy as feasting medieval royals would have demanded. The wall in the en-
trance hall is hung with photos of the rich and good who have dined here, including Vikt-
or Yushchenko (before he was president).
Maska ITALIAN$$$
(vul Dragomana 11B; mains 45-80uah; 11am-11pm) Venice carnival meets Salvador Dalí at
this refined and imaginatively decorated place serving what may be Lutsk's most
flavour-conscious menu. There's a definite Italian bent here with pizzas, pastas and risot-
tos, but if Volyn's take on the Veneto doesn't tickle your fancio, try the fillet of duck with
caremelised pear and plum sauce or Wiener Schnitzel. Very courteous service, a drinks
menu the length of a short novel, and views of the Lutsk Castle from the 1st-floor ter-
race.
Tretyy Kukhol UKRAINIAN$$$
(vul Lesi Ukrainky 24; mains 10-90uah; 9am-1am) Well-executed Ukrainian staples are the
speciality at this popular subterranean restaurant and pub opposite the tourist office.
Roast fish, veal and pork dishes make up the bulk of the menu but there's also green bor-
shch ( appears as 'sorrel soup' on the English menu) and an international beer card.
Brave Schwejk PUB$$$
(vul Lesi Ukrainky 56; mains 25-100uah; 9am-11pm) Named for the famous fictional Czech
soldier Švejk (Schweik in German) in Good Soldier Schweik by Jaroslav Hašek, this
place harks back to the novel's Austro-Hungarian era with its mix of sausages, goulash,
pigs' knuckles, milk veal and similar specialities. The atmosphere is that of a small beer
hall, where you'll find the likes of Paulaner and Warsteiner beer from Germany along-
side Staropramen and Krušovice from the Czech Republic.
Maydan PUB
( www.maydan.com.ua ; vul Boyka 2; mains 22-60uah; 9am-2am) The best, most atmospheric
watering hole in town boasts a dark tavern-like hall with long benches and a stage for
local weekend strummers to perform, two quieter seating areas for daytime imbibing, and
a beer menu populated by brews from Western Europe, Russia and Ukraine. The food
menu is overambitious so stick to Ukrainian staples.
