In-Depth Information
Station Resting Rooms HOTEL$
( Lutsk train station, 3rd fl; dm/tw 80/160uah) The rooms at Lutsk's immaculately renovated
train station would put some midrange hotels to shame, though showers (17uah extra)
and toilets are shared. A mere 80uah gets you a bed in a twin, so pay double to avoid
having a random stranger tumble into your room at 3am. Some rooms overlook the plat-
form - a trainspotter's dream. Check-in is at the information window in the main station
hall downstairs.
Hotel Zaleski HOTEL$$$
( 772 701; www.zaleski-hotel.com ; vul Krivy Val 39; r 350-900uah; ) This super-central,
purpose-built hotel just off vul Lesi Ukrainky has immaculate rooms in reproduction an-
tique style, sparklingly clean up-to-the-minute bathrooms and helpful, English-speaking
staff. The economy singles are a bit poky, but imagine badly varnished parquet floors and
transparent curtains and you'll cheerfully squeeze yourself into these velveted quarters.
DON'T MISS
SCULPTOR'S HOUSE
In a quiet spot by the Styr River, sculptor Mykola Golovan is in the process of cover-
ing his otherwise modest house with his own flowing works, creating a surreal
piece of Gaudí-esque theatre in the most unexpected of locations. It's certainly one
of Ukraine's zaniest dwellings and its creator is often around to show visitors his
opus. To find it, head along vul Kafedralna from Lutsk Castle to the neo-Gothic,
yellow-brick Lutheran church - short vul Lyuteranska starts to the left of here.
Eating & Drinking
Monastyrska Doroha UKRAINIAN$
(vul Lesi Ukrainky 67; restaurant mains 30-60uah, cafe mains up to 15uah; 8am-11pm; ) The
ground-floor self-service canteen ladles out Ukrainian comfort food as well as coffee and
cakes, but the real treat here comes downstairs in the restaurant where the decor rather
risks overshadowing the food. The walls, from floor to ceiling, are plastered in a local
artist's astonishingly detailed version of the town's history, a task that took six months to
complete.
