In-Depth Information
The most convenient place to stay is Hotel Vika ( 238 83; otel_edem@ukr.net; vul
Dubenska 57; r 140-190uah; ) , a big yellow building between the bus station and the
town centre with unexciting new rooms containing scratchy carpets, bland office fur-
niture but bathrooms with full-size baths. In the unlikely event it's full, the owners have
another hotel with a restaurant. The Vopak Supermarket (vul Dubenska 132) next to the
bus station is the best source of sustenance in town.
From Kremenets, there are over 40 daily buses to and from Ternopil (25uah, 1½
hours), and a regular service to and from Pochayiv (8uah, 30 minutes). Other destinations
include Lutsk (32uah, two hours, at least 10 daily), Lviv (46uah, 3¼ hours, two daily)
and Dubno (14uah, twice hourly, 45 minutes).

Lutsk
0332 / POP 202,900
Lutsk is a rare thing in Ukraine - a place that takes tourism seriously. It provides visitors
with the genuine Ukrainian experience, but gives them a free map to help them have it.
Competing with Lviv isn't easy, but Lutsk is running a definite second, far ahead of any
other comparable town in the region.
Volyn's chief settlement has a split personality. The modern town is a relatively suc-
cessful example of Soviet architecture, with broad boulevards and monumental squares
creating a feeling of freedom and space. But the real jewel in Lutsk's crown is its historic
conservation area and castle. This small, slowly refurbishing enclave of cobbled streets is
lined with architecture from centuries past, harking back to Lutsk's Lithuanian, Polish
and Russian history.
Sights
Starting from modern Lutsk's central hub of maydan Teatralny, traffic-free vul Lesi
Ukrainky heads southwest towards the picturesque Old Town, which nestles across busy
vul Kovelska in a bend of the Styr River.
