In-Depth Information
Two 'cures' are on tap. Sodova water is reputedly good for the digestive tract;
Naftusya for kidney, urinary tract and liver ailments. The springs only run at certain
hours and you're supposed to drink the water at a certain temperature, but you can find
extensive instructions posted in several languages, including English. Oddly shaped spa
cups are used here, with a long spout for sucking. They are so designed because the
mineral-rich water is allegedly good for other bodily parts, but not the teeth. You can buy
yourself a cup in one of the park kiosks.
Truskavets has thousands of beds in all price ranges but hotels tend to be much of a
sameness. However, one hillside hotel stands out if you fancy an overnight stay. The
Rixos-Prikarpatye ( 032 477 1111; www.rixos.com.ua ; vul Horodyshche 8; d & tw from
1000uah; ) is an oasis of luxury with a professional medical centre, trendy
modern spa treatments, German patients and Ukrainian oligarchs. It even has its own
supply of Sodova and Naftusya - drunk elegantly through straws up here.
The simplest way to reach Truskavets is by bus (30uah, two hours, two hourly). Ser-
vices leave from Lviv's Bus Station No 8 in front of the train station.
TERNOPIL REGION
This triangular-shaped region at the heart of western Ukraine may have some stunning
countryside, but it's fairly off the radar for independent travellers. Not many foreigners
even make it to the larger population centres, although a couple of the smaller towns like
Pochayiv and Kremenets are worth the effort.

Ternopil

Arrive in Ternopil on the right day, and this town, which lends its name to the wider re-
gion, has a laid-back, leafy almost European feel, rather like an anonymous piece of Po-
land or the Czech Republic. Its signature feature is a huge artificial lake that's pleasant
enough to stroll around of an evening, and the tiny Old Town centre has been appealingly
renovated, but that's about it. For those with time, the town could be a low-key stop-off
between Chernivtsi or Kamyanets-Podilsky and Lviv. Most snore through it on a sleeper
train in the early hours.
