( 242 4952; www.hotelnton.lviv.ua ; vul Shevchenka 154B; s/d from 360/490uah; ) Near
the terminus of tram 7 in Lviv's western suburbs, this far-flung hotel on the road out to
the Polish border may not seem too promising, but this fully renovated place is possibly
Lviv's best deal. Rooms are spacious and well furnished, and contain little extras like
kettles, sewing kits and hairdryers (these are extras in Ukraine!). An entire Hello
magazine of homegrown celebs has stayed here (Ani Lorak, Via Gra, Valery Miladze),
their signed portraits lining the corridors. The breakfast is a bit 'wedding banquet' but
there's enough of a choice to satisfy Western tastes.

transformed into a, well, slightly less unattractive duck in anticipation of free-spending
football fans, sending standards and prices higher. It's really the 'updated' singles and
doubles you're looking at here, budget rooms that retain a whiff of Soviet lodgings
without the nasty pongs and flaky paint. Breakfast is 40uah extra in the 'updated' cat-
egory.

Seasoned travellers to Lviv will be saddened to learn that the George has been partially
renovated and has lost its elusive 'Soviet chic' vibe. A prime candidate for a showstop-
ping five-star establishment, instead this gorgeous 1901 Art Nouveau building has re-
ceived a crass, skin-deep makeover, plasticky, faux antique furniture clashing with the
high-ceilinged period style in the rooms and cheapo carpets concealing the wonderfully
creaky parquet floors. However, communal spaces remain untouched, the English-speak-
ing staff are great and the buffet breakfast is still served in the amazing Oriental-style
restaurant.

unexciting place is a good example of just what you can do with a surplus Soviet
lumpen-hotel. The 90 bog-standard but comfortable rooms are for those who want to
sleep, shower and access the web, but little else.
