St Sophia's Church

With its distinctive ochre-and-white exterior, double clock towers and lav-
ish interior, this small church dating from 1746 is a must-see for fans of baroque archi-
tecture.
Gagarin Park
PARK
Flanking the Teteriv River about 1.5km south of the city centre, this park is a hive of
activity in the summer months and serves up great views of the river gorge and the forest
beyond, accessible via the Berdychivsky bridge over the gorge. To reach the park from
maydan Rad, follow bul Stary from ul Velika Berdychivska to its southern terminus
(around 1km).
Lenin Statue

The city's main square is dominated by a giant Lenin apparently emer-
ging from a lump of bedrock. Over two decades since the collapse of the Soviet Union,
it's still as well cared for as ever.

Throughout the post-Soviet era Zhytomyr has been in desperate need of European-stand-
ard quarters - and now it has them in the shape of a slick Reikartz operation. The latest
addition to this home-grown chain offers perfectly appointed rooms in soothingly co-
ordinated fabrics and woods, pin-clean bathrooms and amiable, English-speaking staff,
all somewhat in stark contrast to what you may experience outside its doors.

All the rooms here have undergone de-Soviet-
isation, though the resulting sofa-dominated rooms, bedecked in translucently shimmer-
ing synthetic curtains and 'busy' carpetry, could hardly be described as soothingly 21st
century. For those looking for a touch of USSR nostalgia, some balconies have views
overlooking the Lenin statue on maydan Soborny. Breakfast included.
