stoho)
A lighthearted take on American diner - large bowls of salad, burgers, fluffy pan-
cakes and - the pride of the place - homemade cola. The best deal here is a takeway
lunch box: pay 35uah, find a bench in Shevchenko Park across the road and enjoy your
meal!

vul Saksahanskoho 40; mains 40-70uah; Pl Lva Tolstoho)
'Knaypa' (a Galitsian -style pub) suggests this place is about drinking, but we like it
most for the hearty Carparthian food, like
banosh
(a West Ukrainian version of polenta)
and
halushki
dumplings. Three kinds of Sinoval's own beer go for 18uah a pint.
Pervak
UKRAINIAN$$$
( 235 0952; vul Rognidenska 2; mains 70-180uah; 11am-midnight; ; Pl Lva Tolstoho)
This place masterfully re-creates old Kyiv (c 1900) without falling into the schmaltz trap
that dogs many a Ukrainian-theme restaurant. The chefs boldly prepare original takes on
Ukrainian classics, which are adroitly delivered to tables by waitresses in frilly, cleavage-
baring country outfits. There's nightly live music and black-and-white silent movies
playing on old Soviet TVs.
Babel
SEAFOOD$$$
( 361 8144; vul Saksahanskoho 33-35; mains 100-140uah; 11am-11pm; ; Olympiyska)
Odesa's famous son Isaak Babel lived in this house, which is this restaurant's main ex-
cuse to exploit the Babel fish pun. The eclectic menu features Black Sea fish and Jewish
forshmak
(herring paste), along with Georgian specialities, such as
khachapuri
cheese
pastry and spicy
kharcho
soup.
