We should thank Ukrainian bureaucracy for leaving the Brazilian owner stranded in
Ukraine with an expired visa. Now fully legalised, Aricio runs one of Kyiv's most atmo-
spheric hostels set in converted flats on the upper floors of a charming house in a quiet,
leafy neighbourhood. In the evening, Ukrainian and expat friends drop in for a beer,
which inevitably results in everyone setting out on a pub crawl. The place is, however,
not as close to the train station as its name might lead you to believe.

Yes, it is a
predictable chain hotel, but it is sparkling new and about the best value you can get for
US$100 a night - and the most comfortable bed, too! Otherwise, it is Ibis - with minim-
alistically designed, slightly cramped rooms and no minibar.

The Soviet-style Express has a mix of renovated and unre-
furbished rooms. The cheapest have tiny beds and lack showers. Prices increase propor-
tionally as amenities and coats of paint are added. Air-con rooms don't cost extra, but
you must request them. Prices go down by about 100uah during weekends and in July
and August.

In the station's
older Central Terminal, this has a comfortable wi-fi-enabled lounge and clean bright
rooms. Head to the right as you exit the Central Terminal.
