walking across the bridge to Truhaniv Island seems boring, you can slide down to the
beach on the other side of the river in a matter of seconds, defying Nikolay Gogol's fam-
ous statement that 'only a rare bird can fly to the middle of the Dnipro'. Located by the
Friendship of Nations Monument.
Beaches
Thanks to a dam a few kilometres downstream, the Dnipro around Kyiv is full of islands
and beaches, which are packed with sunbathers in summer. Water sports like wake-
boarding and sailing are popular summer pursuits, while in winter ice fishers descend on
the frozen river en masse and intrepid 'walrus' swimmers take to the frigid bouillabaisse.
Truhaniv Island

Accessible from central Kyiv via a pedestrian bridge, the island has a
long sandy and usually uncrowded beach facing the city. It is forested and criss-crossed
by roads and paths - a great place for cycling.
