Lavra Area & Around
Any day and in any weather Arsenalna metro station discharges a steady flow of tourists
and pilgrims moving along vul Ivana Mazepy (Sichnevoho Povstannya) towards pl
Slavy. Their main magnet is the Kyevo-Pecherska Lavra - the holiest of holy sites in
Ukraine and beyond, but there are a few other things to see in its vicinity.
The Lavra is a pleasant 15-minute walk from the metro. On the way back, you can
take trolleybus 38 or marshrutka (fixed-route minibus) 520 or 406, which will return you
to the metro station.

(vul Ivana Mazepy 15A; Arsenalna) At the far end of Vichnoy Slavy Park, centred
around a Soviet-era war memorial, you will find a monument from an entirely different
epoch. President Viktor Yushchenko's pet project, it is dedicated to almost four million
victims of the famine, artificially induced by Stalin's policy of collectivisation in
1932-33. Inside the round-shaped structure, village household objects are contrasted
against bloodthirsty quotes from Bolshevik leaders, such as Lenin's 'We should resolve
the Cossack issue by the means of their full extermination; all assets and property to be
confiscated'.
