Violet-Green Swallow
SWIFTS This speedy bird (hence the name) not only catches and consumes its din-
ner of insects while flying, but also never perches, clinging instead to trees trunks
and other vertical surfaces. White-throatedswifts are found during the summer
in the canyons and cliffs at both Zion and Bryce Canyon, often in the same areas
as violet-green swallows (see above). White-throated swifts are basically black and
white—the wings, tail, and top of the head are black; the lower face, throat, and
most of the chest are white.

TURKEYVULTURE Birders in both Zion and Bryce Canyon have reported sightings
of turkey vultures, also called buzzards, which are about the same size as eagles
