Golden Eagle

At least one of America's founding fathers was less than enthusiastic about selecting the bald eagle
as the symbol of the country. In 1784, Benjamin Franklin wrote to his daughter, Sarah, complaining
that the bald eagle is “a bird of bad moral character,” and stating, “The turkey is a much more re-
spectable bird, and withal a true original native of America.”
HERON Large birds with long legs and necks, greatblueherons are ideally suited
for wading in the reservoirs and rivers of Zion National Park in search of a fish din-
ner. They will also eat insects, smaller birds, and rodents. They are sometimes seen
as they migrate through the area in spring or fall. Great blue herons often stand
over 4 feet tall, and have wingspans of almost 6 feet. In color, however, they are not
