When you're done with the i rst pass, Save Metadata to File, then apply a i lter
to show photos with one star only; see Figure 3-2. You can also Delete Rejects
at this point, which is explained later in this chapter. If you edit your work
tightly, this may be as far as you need to go in the editing process, and you can
begin processing your selects in the Develop module.

At er each round of editing, but before i ltering, select all your images and Save
Metadata to File. h is ensures that ratings and any Quick Develop adjustments
are saved on disk as well as in the Lightroom catalog.
A quick note about camera raw i les and XMP sidecars
Because a raw i le straight from the camera typically cannot be modii ed using
sot ware, any metadata applied to the i le that you want to save on disk must
be stored elsewhere. h e most common method is the use of sidecar i les in
.xmp (Extensible Metadata Platform) format. A sidecar i le is associated with
a specii c, individual image i le and contains metadata changes made to the
raw i le in sot ware such as Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw. h e sidecar
must always accompany the original i le in order for the metadata changes to
