Marvão Castle
Attractions & Activities
Marvão has suffered from emigration throughout the last few centuries which is very no-
ticeable when wandering through the cobbled streets as the atmosphere can be very evocat-
ive. However, this atmosphere is completely altered one weekend of the year when crowds
gather in the streets to sing traditional songs and drink wine. This is the Marvão Chest-
nut Festival which occurs every year in November. Once you have climbed the narrow
streets to the Castle, you are treated to a superbly preserved peak into 13 th Century fortific-
ations as well as a small museum with local artefacts. Climbing the battlements, walls, and
towers reward visitors with incredible views of the village and beyond to the mountains
