Fine buildings can be found throughout the city and picking up a map from the tourist
office which points out the most significant ones is worthwhile. Around the main square
is the 16

Century Town Hall and Renaissance Misericordia Church and Hospice, both of
which face the beautiful Renaissance fountain in the square's centre. Just off the square is
the 15
th
Century Parish Church, known locally as Sé, with the Municipal Museum housed
in a gorgeous 18
th
Century Palace close by. On the hill, overlooking the city is the enorm-
ous dome of Santa Luzia Basilica which was modelled on the Sacre Coeur in Paris. The
nearby beaches of Cabedelo and Vila Praia de Ancora are among the best in the region and
if you are planning a visit try to coincide with the annual Festival of Our Lady of Sorrows
which takes place every August.
