Sitting among the hills of the Leiria region, Batalha became a place of significance thanks
to its wonderful monastery, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town itself
is quite small, housing a handful of restaurants, hotels, and pubs, along with a number of
other historical attractions. However, it is also a perfect base for exploring the surround-
ing countryside, especially Serra d'Aire and Candeeiro, both stunning hilly areas known for
their fantastic wine production. The towns of Fatima, Alcobaca, and Nazare are also nearby,
providing superb locations for a day trip.
