Connecting the old city with the new city, Praça da Republica is the main square, featuring
numerous arcaded buildings and fountains, and is the ideal place to begin a day's sightsee-
ing. There are dozens of churches within a short walking distance as well as the impressive
Cathedral which features a huge diversity of architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque,
Romanesque, and Manueline.
A stone's throw from the Cathedral is the Archbishop's Palace, originally built in the 14 th
Century and expanded upon in the 17 th Century, it contains the municipal libraries and the
wonderful Santa Barbara Gardens. Another must-see attraction is the Bom Jesus Sanctuary,
a neoclassical church built in the 18 th Century, it is considered a masterpiece of European
Baroque. Of the numerous museums, the Museo dos Biscaínhos stands out for its superb
collection of Roman pottery, furniture, and relics.
