One of the largest religious shrines in the west, Fatima is located around 150 kilometres
north of Lisbon and welcomes millions of tourists and pilgrims from all over the world. It is
said that Apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary were witnessed here in the early 20

tury, leading to the town becoming a major pilgrimage site on the 12
th
and 13
th
of May and
October every year. Visiting during this time is an experience, when people walk barefoot or
on padded knees as penance, however visiting any other time provides a chance to explore
this extraordinary place.
