Said to be the birthplace of Portugal, Guimarães was the first capital city of the country and
is home to a stunning castle, which is listed as one of Portugal's Seven Wonders. Well-pre-
served monuments and medieval streets offer a real feel of the city's history, as do the nu-
merous historical sites located here. Located near the foot of a mountain, Guimarães also
boasts a rich cultural heritage, claiming the title of European Capital of Culture in 2012
thanks to the numerous events and exhibitions which take place every year.
