Obidos Castle
Attractions & Activities
The village of Obidos is itself a national monument, but there are several must-see attrac-
tions when visiting. First, there is the 12 th Century Castle which was restored after the
earthquake of 1755 and is among Portugal's greatest medieval castles. The Renaissance
church, Igreja de Santa Maria, is lined with blue and white tiles inside and houses numerous
Renaissance tombs. Nearby is the Midericordia Church which features a hugely impressive
Baroque doorway and the fascinating Town Museum. It is worth planning your visit to co-
incide with the Medieval Fair which takes place every July and recreates what the village
was like during the Middle Ages with knights, performances, medieval music, and witches
or during the International Chocolate Festival which takes place in November and displays
incredible (and delicious!) chocolate sculptures.
