A lively and historic city, Coimbra has a young vibe thanks to its magnificent 13 th Century
University, the best in the country. Once the medieval capital of Portugal, the city takes pride
in its historical significance while embracing modern culture and architecture. The historic
centre of the city rolls down the side of a hill along the east bank of the Rio Mondeg, leading
to a modern riverfront packed with bars, restaurants, and a vast shopping complex. Visiting
the city during the academic year, you are bound to feel the influence of the university's stu-
dents with packed bars and cafés, however, visit during the summer months and the city is
quiet and peaceful.
