#4 Sintra
© Wikimedia / F nando
A small hilltop town just an hour from Lisbon, Sintra was traditionally a holiday destination
for the rich, the famous, and royalty. Stunning palaces, exotic gardens, thick forests, and a
UNESCO World Heritage listed town centre often leads to Sintra being described as a Dis-
neyland for grown-ups. The captivating surroundings provide enough photo opportunities to
fill up several albums with incredible views of the deep blue Atlantic from atop the rolling
hills and lush green countryside that spreads for miles around. Be sure to sample the seafood
including goose barnacles or 'percebes' as they're known locally, said to be the best in the
world.
