Famous as the premier tourist destination in Portugal, the Algarve embraced tourism in the
sixties and hasn't looked back since. Yet, away from the coastal resorts, golf courses, holi-
day villas, and endless strips of bars packed with British and German holidaymakers' lies the
real Portugal. Faro may be the regional capital, but, it is the forested slopes of Monchique,
the fortified village of Silves, and the historic town of Sagres that holds the true charm of
this beautiful region along the Atlantic coast.
