main challenge compared to other target orientated synthetic efforts, especially
compared to the total syntheses of natural products, derives from the lack of
functional groups in the final target. These have to be removed during preparation.
Alternatively, unreactive bonds, such as C-H bonds, have to be activated to form
new connections. Furthermore, for larger structures solubility becomes an issue,
which is mostly addressed by adding solubilizing groups. Otherwise, heterogenous,
biphasic conditions must be applied (Fig. 2 ).
