timeline. By default, most elements are displayed as soon as the slide
is displayed. Many will remain on display for the full time that the slide
is displayed.
To display the timeline, you must be in Edit view. Then go to the
View menu and select Show Timeline.

In Figure 7-39, the timeline displays a “stack” of three elements plus
the slide itself (on the bottom of the stack). This particular slide will be
displayed for 6.2 seconds. The slide displays the background for 2 sec-
onds, then the highlight box and text caption display. After the slide
has been displayed for 4 seconds, the mouse element (representing
the cursor movement) displays and begins to move along the desig-
nated cursor path. This will take 2.2 seconds to go from beginning to
end. Though the highlight box remains visible for the rest of the slide,
the text box disappears shortly after the mouse element begins.
The timeline controls are displayed at the bottom of the timeline.
The first two allow you to preview elements on the slide, just as they
will appear within the movie. The first, a square icon, stops the pre-
view, and the second, a triangular icon, starts the preview. As you
preview the slide, a red line moves across the timeline, indicating the
time on the slide. This red line is the playhead, and you can use it to
