Adding and Editing Visual Elements
The real power of Captivate is not in the slide backgrounds or the
screen capture images, but rather in the variety of elements that you
can place on top of the background of the slides. Each element has a
variety of options that you can set to fully customize the look and feel
of your movie. The major elements are:
Text captions—Text captions contain words that describe the actions
going on in each slide. These can be automatically generated by
Captivate, or you can manually add them.
Highlight boxes—Highlight boxes surround specific portions of the
screen that you want the viewer to notice. These can be automati-
cally generated by Captivate, or you can manually add them.
Image boxes—In addition to using images as the backgrounds of your
slides, you can add images to any slide in image boxes. This gives
you more control over the display of your image than just using
the image as a background.
Animations—You can import an existing animation file into a Captivate
slide. Valid formats include SWF, AVI, and animated GIF files. Cap-
tivate comes with a variety of predefined animations, such as
arrows and spinning boxes, as well as a collection of animation
schemes you can add to your text.
Click boxes—A click box is an area that the viewer must click before
the next slide will be shown. See Chapter 9 for more detail on this
type of element.
Text entry boxes—Text entry boxes allow the viewer to enter infor-
mation, as in quizzing or other interactive applications. See
Chapter 9 for more detail on this type of element.
Rollover elements—This category includes rollover captions,
slidelets, rollover images, and zoom boxes. These elements dis-
play in the finished movie when the viewer rolls the cursor over
specified areas of the slide. See Chapter 9 for more detail on this
type of element.
