The lagoon's Caribbean-like waters contain calcium deposits and high levels of sulphur,
indicatingtheprobablepresenceofpetroleumbeneathitswaters.Thelakeliespartiallybe-
low sea level, at an altitude of173meters above sea level but also 222meters deep. One of
the more exciting theories concerning the lake's formation contends the lakebed is an old
meteor crater,withtherestofthemeteor that created ithavingfallen nearCobáninanarea
known as the Nim Tak'a depression.
There's a visitors center where you'll find cooking facilities, a campground, a shelter
with bunk beds ($4 p/p), showers, hiking trails, and canoes for rent ($1). You can string a
hammock up for $0.75.
Thepark'smainentranceisafewkilometersbeforePlayaGrandeasyoucomealongthe
road from the east. From there it's a four-kilometer walk to the lakeside through some very
nice forest trails.
